Why Recess?

Why breaks need their own game app.

You can open social media or video to rest, then lose the moment to come back. Recess was built to turn that break into one puzzle, a clear stop, and a return to work.

The Problem

Ever meant to take just five minutes, then missed the moment to return?

When focus breaks, it is natural to glance at your phone. You only want to step away from work and reset your head, but social media and video keep feeding you the next post, the next clip, and the next notification.

Before long, the break has run longer than planned, and work does not feel any easier to return to. Recess is not trying to challenge the desire to rest. It is designed around the moment when a break becomes hard to leave.

The Solution

A good break needs a little immersion and a clear ending.

Recess chose logic puzzles for that reason. You read the board, look for clues, and choose the next move. It is not loud stimulation or competition; it is attention placed on one small problem.

Logic puzzles come with natural stopping points: one puzzle, one game, one stage. During a work break, you do not need a system that keeps pulling you forward. You need a unit you can comfortably close.

Design Principles

Recess rebuilds classic logic games around three ideas.

01

Shift attention

Move attention away from the work task toward something quieter. A puzzle board gives your mind a slightly different direction.

02

Settle into focus

Not too passive, not reflex-heavy, not competitive. Observation and deduction create a quieter kind of concentration.

03

Make it easy to stop

One puzzle, one game, one stage. With elapsed time visible, you can decide when to return.

The Redesign

So we did not simply copy the classics.

Minesweeper and Solitaire both have moments that can break a break. Deduction turns into luck. Perfect play can still lose to an unwinnable deal. Recess designs those frustrating endings out.

Minesweeper: Pure Logic Mode

Minesweeper boards are verified by a Logic Solver, so they can be solved by logic alone from start to finish.

Solitaire: Clear Path Mode

Solitaire deals avoid unwinnable layouts, and moves that would break the path to completion are blocked.

Block Escape Puzzle

From hundreds of thousands of candidates, 1,000 stages are selected for how satisfying they are to solve.

The Product

Built to let you leave, not hold you longer.

Recess has no ads, no stamina system, and no subscription. Ads interrupt play, stamina asks you to think about remaining turns, and recurring billing adds pressure that does not belong in a short break.

The screen shows elapsed time, not a timer that turns time into a score. It does not force the break to end; it simply gives you the information to decide, 'time to go back.'
